DEFRA’s Chief Scientist visited BIFoR FACE in May. They toured the facility and had the chance to hear about the research that is conducted at this LTE.

The newly appointed Chief Scientific Adviser and Director General for DEFRA, Professor Anjali Goswami FRS, visited BIFoR FACE on 8 May 2026. The DEFRA delegation was also joined by Professor Bianca Ambrose-Oji, Chief Scientist for Forest Research. Both Chief Scientists were invited to BIFoR FACE so colleagues at the University of Birmingham (UoB) could showcase the breadth of DEFRA- and forest-facing research being led across the College.

Following a tour of the FACE facility, Professor Bill Bloss (Head of College for Life and Environmental Sciences, UoB) introduced the College and highlighted the vital importance of long-term experiments, such as BIFoR FACE, in sustaining university research power as well as furthering environmental knowledge more generally. Throughout the Chief Scientists' visit, the researcher hosts from Birmingham emphasised the importance of long-term experiments such as BIFoR FACE. The BIFoR-FACE team hope this visit emphasises not only the importance, but also the urgency, of tackling environmental challenges in the modern era.
