Fundraise for the ECT

Why fundraise for us?

Long-term ecological experiments (LTEs) are a vital resource across the UK and the only means of detecting slow acting-changes in our environment. We preserve LTEs so they can yield valuable evidence, and we champion LTEs to policymakers and new audiences so they can use that evidence for policymaking and sustainable land use. By fundraising for the ECT, you are helping us to maintain LTEs, communicate the science behind LTEs, and enable us to champion for them.

Legal and Safety Regulations

You will need to read the Safe and Legal Regulations before you register your event. As an “in-aid-of volunteer”, you are responsible for organising the event, and the ECT cannot be held liable for accidents, injuries, loss or damages as a result of your event.

  • When fundraising for us, you must use the term that you are fundraising “in aid of the Ecological Continuity Trust”.

  • You must be 16+ years to fundraise.

If you are under the age of 18, you will need a parent’s or guardian’s permission to fundraise.

  • You must get permission if you are holding an event in a public place either from the local authority, or the property owner.

  • You will need to have Public Liability Insurance if your event involved the general public. The venue where you are hosting an event may already have one so always ask. If you’re holding an event at home or on private property, you will need to check your insurance covers this too.

  • Always tell people at your fundraisers if you are taking photos, and give them an option to opt out of getting their photo.

  • In some cases, licenses will be required. This includes lotteries, playing recorded music, putting banners or signs in public spaces. Contact your local authority and ask the staff at your chosen venue which licenses you will require.

  • If you are providing food, you will need to check the Food Standards Agency guidelines on preparing, handling, cooking and storing food. Depending on your venue, you may or may not be allowed to bring in additional food and drink. Always ask your venue first.

  • You are required to fill in a Risk Assessment and send it to us. For guidance on creating one, see Risk assessment: Template and examples. Your venue might also require a copy.

See Event safety - Running an event safely on how to manage health and safety requirements.

Once you have conducted your Risk Assessment, you will need to put in place how you will manage and mitigate risks, such as having a First Aid kit. If you are hosting a large event (500 people) there needs to be a minimum of two qualified first-aiders on site.

Consider the latest Government guidance on Covid-19.

  • If you have to collect personal information, only collect the information you need. Do not share it, keep it safe and only keep it for as long as you need and then delete the data.
